8/1/2020 0 Comments EVO Rat DietI get asked what I feed my rats all the time, so decided to put the answer in one place. Here you will find the mix I have fed my rats since 2016 (with a couple of ingredient updates along the way). Rolled Grains Sometimes referred to as Flaked Grains, this is the main ingredient in my mix. I personally buy 50lb bags of rolled mixed grains. Here are some suppliers I have used:
Sunflower Seeds I use hulled sunflower seeds to avoid a lot of mess. Again I buy in bulk, a 20lb bag from Tractor Supply. They also have a smaller bag available. Azure market also sells sunflower seeds, they are slightly more expensive, but probably worth it if you are already purchasing their grain blend. Dog Kibble Purina Salmon for Sensitive Stomachs is my preferred dog kibble. I recommend you shop around for the best price. I have used both these formulas. I prefer the Purina One to Purina Pro Plan. If you prefer a brand of kibble produced from organic, human grade ingredients, you might wish to check out Petcurian Brand. The ratio of these 3 ingredients is as follows in whatever unit of measure you choose (cup, scoop, mug, etc):
Sometimes the 6 Grain Blend is out of stock - an alternative that I have used is this Four Flaked Grain Blend with Sunflower Seeds already in it from Country Life Natural Foods. If you choose to use this brand the ratios are:
If you prefer to use a prepared Rat Block, I recommend Oxbow. It is expensive compared to the breakdown of buying the ingredients of the mix, but you can add to it to make it go further:
Of course any of the options should be supplemented with fresh veggies and occasional fresh fruits. You can also add fresh herbs like Cilantro, Parsley, Oregano, and Basil anything that is leafy. The residents here LOVE Kale! I sometimes crush up dried pasta and add that to the mix (0.5 Ratio) and love these two when I can find them: Forage Mix
This mix was shared by the owner of Standing Stone Rattery. All items can be purchased from Tractory Supply Company, and no more than a handful should be scattered around the cage 1 x week to encourage your rats to forage.
I hope you find this helpful - let me know if you have any questions.
